Hair is a part of a person’s identity. Haven’t you ever seen a makeover show where a person was adamant about not cutting his/her hair? People start to feel like their hair is a part of themselves. When they lose their hair, they feel like they have lost a part of their life. It can be very traumatic emotionally.

Perhaps the biggest reason people are embarassed is because there is a huge stigma in most cultures regarding hair loss. I have alopecia and I wear a wig. Whenever I go without my wig, it never fails that someone comes up and asks me or someone I am with if I am going through chemo. Everyone assumes I have cancer. A bald man is sometimes seen as sexy and powerful (if he is also tan and muscular). But a short fat bald man is seen as ugly. A bald woman is seen as sick or just plain weird. Because people do not understand alopecia and hair is so important to our culture, sometimes people get embarassed. They do not want to be judged poorly. Hair is associated with a woman’s beauty. To lose it means that some people may not see her as beautiful anymore.

P.S. Are you writing a paper on this or something??

Just think how you would feel if you started losing your hair, getting bare patches on your scalp. Then you have the answer.
The effects of alopecia areata are primarily socially and emotionally disturbing. In alopecia universalis, however, loss of eyelashes and eyebrows and hair in the nose and ears can make the person more vulnerable to dust,

Alopecia can certainly be the cause of psychological stress. Because hair loss can lead to significant appearance changes, individuals may experience social phobia, anxiety, and depression. Some psychologists have even gone as far as to describe the feelings of loss and depression felt at the onset of the disease as being similar to those felt by people afflicted with terminal illness.
